At the halfway point of the ride, at Mace Ranch Park, professional BMX riders throw themselves into the air off a ramp for you. This is your reward for pedalling out there, and it is worth the trip on its own.
StuntMasters
The riders are StuntMasters, and this festival is lucky to get them. They have been performing since 1999 and are led by John Parker, a ten-time X Games athlete with more than thirty years of competition and show experience. They tour nationwide, mostly doing school assemblies, and they are properly good: this is not a couple of lads with a ramp, it is a professional action sports team.
The thing that makes them a fit for this festival is what the show is actually about. StuntMasters build their performances around a message, and it is the same one every time: set a goal, work at it, fall off, get back on, keep going. They talk about perseverance and bike safety between tricks, to an audience of children who have just ridden several miles on their own bikes to get there. It lands rather well in that context.
Kim Eichorn makes it happen
The stunt show is at Mace Ranch Park because Kim Eichorn pays for it. She is a REALTOR with Windermere Signature Properties on 2nd Street, and she is about as Davis as it is possible to be: a third-generation Yolo County realtor, born and raised here, who started in the business in 1994 working alongside her mother Peggy, herself a Davis property veteran of decades. Both her daughters went through Davis schools.
Three decades of selling houses in the town you grew up in gives you a particular kind of stake in it. Kim is a top producer and has been among the busiest agents in Davis and Yolo County for years, and she puts a chunk of that back into the thing several thousand people ride their bikes to on Halloween. Getting there
The ride leaves Community Park at 11am on Saturday, October 31 and is back around 12:30. Mace Ranch Park is the turnaround, the round trip is under five miles on Davis bike paths, and the stunt show is what is waiting for you at the far end, along with brain juice and Downtown Tom.
Ride out. Watch somebody do a backflip on a bicycle. Ride home. Then stay at Community Park for the rest of the festival, because at 2:30 there are zombies falling out of an aeroplane.
