SPIN bikes and scooters to rent, at Community Park
No bike? No problem. Spin is the shared e-bike and e-scooter scheme run jointly by the City of Davis and UC Davis, with up to a thousand vehicles around town, and it is the simplest way to get wheels for the day.
- Download the Spin app, iOS or Android.
- Create an account and add a payment method. If cost is a barrier, apply for Spin Access, which gives reduced rates.
- Open the map in the app to find a bike or scooter near you.
- Scan the QR code on it to unlock.
- When you are done, park it responsibly out of the footpath and tap End Ride in the app.
Try the app once before parade day rather than in a field surrounded by three thousand people. A helmet is strongly encouraged at any age and required by California law under 18, and normal road rules apply even in a costume.
Come by train, ride the parade
This is the part people from out of town do not realise. Davis has an Amtrak station a few minutes from downtown, a bike lane on more or less everything, and a shared bike and scooter scheme covering the whole town. You can step off a train with no bicycle, unlock one on your phone, and be riding with several thousand zombies by half past eleven in the morning.
That is what makes this a regional day out rather than a local one. Nobody needs to drive into Davis, find parking on the busiest Saturday of the town's year, and then work out what to do with a car for five hours. There is more on getting here on the travel and lodging page.
