The entire centre of the main field, given over to playing. Not a table in a corner: the middle of the park, run by volunteers from Discovery Christian Church.
The Discovery Family Fun Zone is an event the City of Davis asked us to create in support of the 4th of July celebration, and we are excited to extend it to other awesome community events like the Zombie Bike Parade! We will be providing lawn games, face painting, Lego car racing, art activities, and more!
It is free, like everything else at the festival, and there is nothing to sign up for. Walk in.
What you will find
Start at the welcome area, where the volunteers will point you at whatever your children are most likely to disappear into for the next half hour.
- Lawn games: a putting green, cornhole, ladder ball, Spikeball and Jenga.
- LEGO car racing.
- Face painting.
- Art activities, including a crafts table and a collaborative coloring banner that everybody adds to across the day. Come back later and see what it has turned into.
- Plastic axe throwing, which is exactly as satisfying as it sounds and is entirely plastic.
Why it is here
The festival is loud, and that is mostly the point. But a four year old can only take so much of a loud thing before they need somewhere to sit on the grass and do something with their hands.
That is what this is. A staffed, friendly stretch of the park where the activities are laid out, somebody is there to help, and nobody is trying to sell you anything. Parents get to stand still for ten minutes. Children get a pile of things to do that are not a parade.

Discovery is a diverse, inclusive, church family that exists to help people discover and rediscover the good news of Jesus. One of the ways we accomplish that mission is by supporting events in Davis that build community and bring joy.
The Fun Zone is staffed by their volunteers, who are giving up their Halloween Saturday to run lawn games for other people's children, which is the sort of thing this festival runs on.
